Library Sciences Intern/Volunteer at Environmental Library in Bhutan

The Royal Society for Protection of Nature (RPSN) is an environmental non-profit located in the gorgeous mountain Kingdom of Bhutan. RPSN is seeking a library sciences master’s student, recent graduate, or experienced volunteer librarian to set  up the first-ever environmental library in the country starting around May 2011 for a 6-to-12 month internship. Starting date and length is negotiable.

Although supervised, this internship would be in large part self-directed, allowing you to put your coursework into practice. This position would include administrative,  technical and user services.

Position description

  • Maintain catalog and track books
  • Recommend book or journal acquisition
  • Assist library users
  • Create research/library user guides by subject area (the subject areas would be provided by RSPN)
  • Recommend rotating educational library displays
  • Work with Bhutanese counterpart in librarian tasks
  • Help in acquisition of additional journals and academic databases
  • Records setup and maintenance
  • Make and implement recommendations on library improvement as necessary
  • Other librarian duties as needed

Position requirements

  • Master’s degree in progress or completed library science or related field
  • Bachelor’s degree in related field
  • Interest in environmental issues preferred but not required
  • Library experience preferred but not required for students
  • Fluency in English
