Demonstration Garden to Farmers Group in Chhukha

As part of the project on ‘Empower Small Scale Bhutanese Farmers to Increase Crop Yields and Sustainable Livelihoods through Climate Smart Agriculture Approaches’ in Chhukha and Zhemgang Dzongkhags funded by FCPF/World Bank, the Royal Society for Protection of Nature has supported a set of Green-houses, water sprinkle and 10 varieties of vegetable seeds, sufficient to all the households with the objectives to develop a climate smart demonstration garden for production of organic and climate resilient vegetables. The infrastructure was supported to Bayul-kuenza Organic Farmers Group of Bongo Gewog in Chhukha Dzongkhag. 

The agriculture equipment and vegetable seeds were handed over with signing of an agreement with the Chairperson of the farmers group and village Tshogpa on June 6, 2016. A simple By-Law for management of Green-house was also developed and handed over to the group. The installation of Green-house and water sprinkle was led by four farmers who are skilled in installation of agriculture infrastructures. The Green-house was installed within a duration of 5 days including the site development in a common land belongs to the group. The Green-house will be used as demonstration gander by Bayul-kuenza Organic Farmers Group for production of organic and climate resilient vegetables throughout the year. The group is planning to plant vegetables inside the Green-house by end of June 2020. 

The Bayul-kuenza Organic Farmers Group was instituted in 2019 with the support from RSPN and Chhukha Dzongkhag with 13 members. The group is registered as cooperative with the Department of Marketing Cooperatives of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forest. The group will promote and support organic and climate resilient vegetable productions to all the households in Bayul-kuenza and Gidaphu villages. The group will also coordinate the marketing of the farm products.
